Shop Talk: A Bit More On The Charles Simon x UNEKUAL Watch Roll

This week, we’re deviating from our usual program - of Nautilus ‘dash’ dials and spring auction highlights - to say a few words about Charles Simon - who we’ve collaborated with on a classic, ever-useful triple-black watch roll.

Those who’ve been UNEKUAL fans for a hot minute know how much time we’ve got for Charles  Simon. The Canadian firm, started by two engineers (who supply the brand with its moniker), are doing incredibly thoughtful work in the realm of high-concept accessories.

The brand’s offering goes well beyond just watches - the ‘Bonaventure’ suitcase, with its retractable wheels for instance looks like something straight out of 2001: A Space Odyssey. That said, solutions for transporting, protecting and displaying your timepiece are certainly their specialty - which is why we’ve tapped them to design something that excels at all three.

The Watch Roll also serves as a stand when opened.

Our UNEKUAL watch roll is an exercise in charming dualities. Rigidly constructed in Montreal, using the softest of premium materials; discreet by default, but decorative when you’d like it to be.

Unlike a lot of typical watch rolls, Charles Simon’s makes use of a clever nesting design. The internal cushion (clad in alcantara and available in three different wrist sizes) can be pulled out of the chamber and flipped on its head - becoming a watch stand with a quick change of position.

Inspired by three-handed Calatravas, or the perfect cashmere rollneck, we opted to keep superfluous details to a minimum. The roll’s grained bull leather exterior is unadorned, save for the one non-functional side. Look closely and you’ll catch a glimpse of our logo: the slashed mathematical symbol, applied using marquetry, which denotes inequation.

Not every timepiece is built equal: why should the objects you use to store ‘em be any different?
